Egress Windows Installed
The International Residential Code (IRC) requires all basements with living space and every sleeping room to have at least one openable emergency escape and rescue opening.
Before you finish your basement, it is a good idea to have our Project
Manager visit and review your foundation to plan for this required emergency
escape. He will determine where the best location(s) would be to install
an egress window(s).
There are certain requirements that the code states, like:
- Shall have a sill height of not more than 44 inches above the floor.
- All emergency escape and rescue openings shall have a minimum net clear opening of 5 square feet.
- Minimum clear opening width of 20 inches.
- Minimum clear opening height is 24 inches.
Ram Jack New England has the necessary tools and equipment to install your egress window(s). The process is handled very smoothly with our Project Manager reviewing your foundation and designing a plan of installation. He will provide you with a detailed written proposal stating the work to be done and also the estimated costs.
Once you make a decision to move forward with your egress window installation, he will arrange to obtain the necessary building permits and schedule a crew to do the installation.

Most of the excavations to install an egress window are done by hand to avoid any damage to the landscaping. Once the wall opening is cut, it is important to properly prepare the space for the installation of the window itself. It is important that the window have proper drainage to protect the basement from flooding.
Attention to downspouts and other drainage is another important consideration when installing an egress window. It is important that all water be directed to a location away from the foundation and the window well opening, so that surface water does not flow into the window well and into the basement.
